About this innovation

Problem Statement:
Nighttime burglaries Nigeria is currently struggling with a severe economic crisis. With the country\'s inflation rate at 15.43% and food inflation climbing even higher to 20.31%, economic hardship is pushing more people into crime, making nighttime burglaries increasingly common. Compounding this economic pressure is the widespread insecurity across the nation. Violence from Boko Haram, rampant kidnapping, and banditry have infiltrated our society, particularly in rural areas. Consequently, most young people are fleeing these unsafe regions and drifting to urban centers in search of safety. However, once they arrive, they cannot find jobs or competitive opportunities, and many ultimately resort to nighttime burglaries as a desperate means of survival. The harsh reality is that these burglars often target small businesses because they are extremely vulnerable. The main problem is that most small business owners cannot afford proper security systems. Over 60% of shop owners rely only on basic padlocks and night guards—which are often insufficient to stop determined criminals, and expensive to maintain for struggling merchants. This leaves their goods completely unprotected at night.

Solution Statement:
Intrud_sw has been innovated to solve this problem. It is a simple, smart security device for SMEs like street shops, market stalls, and small warehouses.

How it works:
When someone approaches the door post at night, Intrud first flashes a bright beam of light to scare them away and if the intruder does run away immediately, a loud alarm is triggered after 10sec.

Unique Selling Point – power bank powered:
Electricity is unreliable in Nigeria, and solar installation is too expensive. So Intrud_sw is designed to run on a regular power bank. For instance, one full charge of a 20,000mAh power bank lasts 4 nights (48 hours). On the fourth day, the shop owner simply takes the power bank to a nearby charging kiosk - costs just ₦300, recharges it, and plugs it back when closing for the day. Intrud_sw starts working any time the shop owner closes from 7pm and automatically deactivates by 6:00 am the next day to allow the owner to resume without causing alarm. It is a patented device.

🎯 The Problem

It prevents nighttime burglaries. Small shops, market stalls, and small warehouses cannot afford effective nighttime security. Most rely on padlocks and night guards, which are often not enough and are expensive, so their goods are left unprotected and easy to steal at night. Therefore, Intrud_sw is an affordable, reliable nighttime protection gadget for small businesses against burglary.

💡 The Solution

How it works:
Intrud has a motion sensor, a beam of light and an alarm installed at the door post of a shop and they are all connected to a control panel inside the shop via CAT6 wire. When someone approaches the door post at night, Intrud first flashes a bright beam of light to scare them away and if the intruder does run away immediately, a loud alarm is triggered after 10sec. Unique Selling Point – power bank powered: Electricity is unreliable in Nigeria, and solar installation is too expensive. So Intrud_sw is also designed to run on a regular power bank. For instance, one full charge of a 20,000mAh power bank lasts 4 nights (48 hours). On the fourth day, the shop owner simply takes the power bank to a nearby charging kiosk - costs just ₦300, recharges it, and plugs it back when closing for the day. Intrud_sw starts working any time the shop owner closes as from 7pm and automatically deactivates by 6:00 am the next day to allow the owner to resume without causing alarm.

Modification: Intrud_sw is built on a microcontroller and it is IoT-compliant, hence integrating it with a communication module enables the shop owner to receive a mobile phone alert when the alarm is triggered.
