About this innovation

Chatdoc connects people to licensed doctors through familiar communication channels such as WhatsApp, phone calls, and our digital platform. Beyond online consultations, we establish physical telehealth offices within communities, where residents can access basic health screening, health education, and essential medicines for common illnesses.
Our model brings healthcare closer to people by combining technology with trusted local support. We identify, train, and empower community health workers from the communities we serve. These workers conduct basic health screenings, provide free blood pressure checks, educate residents on disease prevention and early diagnosis, and teach them how to connect with licensed doctors virtually in their preferred language.

When residents need medical advice, they can book appointments through our digital platform or receive assistance from community health workers to connect with a doctor through WhatsApp or phone calls. Where necessary, patients can access essential medicines through our community offices and partner local pharmacies.
This approach makes digital healthcare easier to understand and use, even for people with limited digital literacy or internet access. It also reduces the need for travel when a consultation can be handled remotely.

We primarily serve rural and underserved communities, low-income households, and people who face financial, geographical, or digital barriers to healthcare. We also support people who need convenient access to medical advice, basic health screening, and health education.

🎯 The Problem

Nigeria’s healthcare system faces significant challenges, including a shortage of doctors, unequal distribution of healthcare professionals and medical resources, high healthcare costs, and limited access to preventive services, particularly in rural and underserved communities. The World Health Organization reported a density of approximately 3.86 doctors per 10,000 people in Nigeria in 2022, far below the recommended density of 1 doctor in 600 people. The concentration of healthcare professionals and facilities in urban centres leaves many rural residents with limited access to medical care and forces them to travel long distances to reach health facilities.
The cost of healthcare creates another major barrier. A doctor’s consultation in some private urban clinics can cost around $20, making it unaffordable for many low-income households, particularly those already struggling with basic living expenses. With a large proportion of Nigerians living below the poverty line and healthcare expenses largely paid out of pocket, many people delay consultations, skip medical screenings, or seek treatment only when their conditions become severe. Limited access to health education also reduces awareness of disease prevention, warning signs, and the importance of early diagnosis.
Although telemedicine platforms offer an alternative to traditional hospital visits, adoption remains limited in many grassroots and rural communities. Poor internet connectivity, limited digital literacy, low awareness, and misconceptions about the reliability of online consultations prevent many people from benefiting from these services. Consequently, the people who could benefit most from affordable digital healthcare often face the greatest barriers to accessing it.
These challenges also have environmental consequences. Travelling long distances to access healthcare increases transport costs and, where petrol or diesel vehicles are used, contributes to fossil fuel consumption and carbon emissions. Unnecessary physical visits for consultations that could be handled remotely place additional financial and environmental burdens on patients.

💡 The Solution

Chatdoc addresses healthcare access challenges through a hybrid model that combines digital consultations with a physical presence in underserved communities. We establish community-based telehealth offices where residents can access health screening, education, and essential medicines for common illnesses. We identify, train, and empower community health workers from within these communities to conduct basic screening, offer free blood pressure checks, and educate residents on disease prevention and early diagnosis.
To overcome digital literacy, language, and connectivity barriers, our community health workers teach residents how to connect with licensed doctors virtually through familiar channels such as WhatsApp, phone calls, and our digital platform, where patients can also book appointments directly. Patients can access essential medicines through our community offices and partner local pharmacies.
