About this innovation

AgroLink Smart Storage is an agricultural innovation focused on reducing post-harvest losses among smallholder farmers in Nigeria. Many farmers experience significant losses after harvesting because of inadequate storage facilities, poor ventilation, moisture buildup, pest damage, and limited access to suitable preservation technologies.

The proposed innovation combines affordable, improved crop-storage units with solar-powered ventilation and basic temperature and humidity monitoring. The system is designed to help farmers identify unsuitable storage conditions early and take corrective action before their produce deteriorates.

AgroLink will initially focus on crops such as maize, beans, rice, and other suitable grains, with storage methods adapted to the specific needs of each crop. A simple digital record system will help users monitor stored quantities, storage dates, and produce quality. The project also aims to connect participating farmers with cooperatives, aggregators, and potential buyers to improve market access.

The intended beneficiaries include smallholder farmers, agricultural cooperatives, rural farming communities, and produce aggregators. The project will begin with a small pilot involving selected farmers, followed by performance evaluation and improvements based on user feedback.

Our long-term goal is to develop a scalable, affordable, and environmentally responsible post-harvest management solution that helps farmers preserve more of what they grow, reduce avoidable waste, and improve household income.

🎯 The Problem

Smallholder farmers in Nigeria often lose part of their harvest because of inadequate storage facilities, pest infestation, excessive moisture, poor ventilation, and delays in selling their produce. These challenges reduce the quantity and quality of crops available for sale and can force farmers to sell quickly at unfavourable prices.

Many existing storage technologies are either too expensive for small-scale farmers or difficult to access in rural communities. There is also limited access to affordable monitoring tools that help farmers recognise and respond to poor storage conditions.

AgroLink Smart Storage addresses these challenges by making improved storage practices and affordable monitoring technology more accessible to farmers and cooperatives.

💡 The Solution

AgroLink Smart Storage proposes a modular, affordable crop-storage system that combines improved storage structures, solar-assisted ventilation where appropriate, and basic temperature and humidity sensors.

The solution will include:

Improved storage units designed for selected crops and local conditions.
Solar-assisted ventilation to support airflow where the storage design requires it.
Temperature and humidity monitoring to help users identify potentially unsafe storage conditions.
Practical training on drying, cleaning, sorting, pest prevention, and safe storage.
Simple inventory records to track stored produce and storage duration.
Partnerships with farmer cooperatives and produce buyers to support better market access.

The first phase will involve building or adapting a small pilot unit, testing it with selected farmers, and comparing storage performance with existing practices. Findings will guide further development, affordability improvements, and expansion to additional farming communities.

The innovation aims to reduce avoidable losses, improve produce quality, and help farmers make better decisions about when and where to sell their harvest.
